[It is 3 in the morning when Caviar gets a message from his roommate, who ostensibly should have been just in the other room but maybe not if the way he's TEXTING him instead is anything to go by]
Captain Captain are you awake I need you for something it's urgent
[And this is why you should always leave your computer on, in case of emergencies!
Caviar's changes are still fairly fresh. He may be a giant wolf man, but the lingering fog has yet to let up and allow him to experience a day form he doesn't even realize he has, let alone the massive fatigue that comes along with it. As such, he's yet to become nocturnal, but the slumbering captain's ears twitch when he hears the alert.
Thank goodness for better hearing.
Groggy, Caviar pulls himself to the computer, trying to figure out just WHY Sparkling wouldn't come to him if they live together. Would that mean he isn' home then...?
Seeing "urgent" is all it really takes to get his full attention. A once barely awake Caviar now finds his heart racing. No need to write anything fancy, he gets right to the point:]
[Is Sparkling well aware that sending this sort of message after everything is probably more than a little alarming? Yes. Does that stop him from sending it anyway…]
Fine for now In the bar Please be careful coming down the stairs
[That's...a bit of a relief, but not by much. Sure, he doesn't have to go full "battle stations" mode, but Sparkling can possibly hear the haste in his steps as he hurries for the stairs anyway. His friend may not be dying, but he still finds it hard to believe an urgent message in the middle of the night isn't some sort of emergency.
Having mastered the stairs by now, Caviar is sure to take Sparkling's warning seriously, but a part of him really hopes he isn't just making fun of how he used to struggle-]
Well, I'm here.
[He doesn't hear any serious cries of distress, or smell any large amount of blood that would make him worry. Sparkling's kitchen smells of blood more than here, so hopefully that means the vampire's still in one piece.]
[He’s here! And he is correct, there doesn’t seem to be anything noticeably immediately off about the bar. All of the chairs are up on the tables and everything is closed up for the night, even if Sparkling wouldn’t yet be sleeping until the sun rose. Speaking of the Vampire, Caviar will be able to spot him huddled just behind the bar, peering over the edge of it looking…tense.]
Captain!
[He hisses, trying to gesture for him to hurry over.]
Quickly, this way before-
[Sparkling nearly jumps out of his skin as something interrupts him. The sound of frantic pitter-pattering against hardwood floor. Little nails tugging at the cracks as they scramble.
And then…]
Arf arf arf!!!
[Out from where she had been exploring underneath one of the couches in the lounge, a little dog appears. She’s full of energy and seems fit to vibrate right out the window when she sees ANOTHER person appear, spinning in a fast, excited circle with her white tail wagging so fast it’s become a blur.
Except…this is no normal dog. It’s a cake.
A Cake Hound, to be precise. She seems a little different than your garden variety strawberry shortcake, with light yellow icing and toppings befitting a cheesecake. And Sparkling is definitely not hiding behind his bar from her, all while she’d been sadly trying to find him. Now that Caviar is here though, she has someone else to get attention from, her little cake butt wiggling as she hops up on her hind paws to try and jump up onto Caviar’s legs.]
[Ah, it's good to see Sparkling is indeed not dead, but he can't help but look confused when he sees his friend apparently hiding...? What's he got to hide from, he's a giant bat-
Then it happens, the next thing the captain knows, there's suddenly something at his legs. A pet? Did Sparkling get a pet, of all times? It seems kind of silly, keeping an animal inside a bar, especially with how nice The Grapevine is. An untrained animal could chew up furniture or scare away customers, especially since it's a monster and already terrifying Sparkling.
Wait, what?]
How in the world did this get here?!
[Caviar instinctively goes to reach for a gun he doesn't even have, lip curling when he realizes he's still unarmed in this world. Maybe it was a miracle that he didn't have a way to instantly shoot it, however, because this waste of time has made him realize the little hound isn't doing much to hurt him. Just being...annoying.
Perhaps by a new instinct now, Caviar's ears fold back and his already snarling maw lets out a growl. Without even really thinking about it, he barks only once, his canine way of telling the little cake hound to behave before he shows him the business.]
[Sparkling doesn't really have much opportunity to immediately explain, not when Caviar is facing down this wild animal. Needless to say he's not sure what he's expecting as the hound pants excitedly, tongue lolling from her jaws and dripping sticky sugar onto the floor.
But when Caviar barks at her, her ears perk upright. Her tail hasn't stopped wagging, but she suddenly seems a lot more alert and focused than she had been a moment before. The snarling is also not unnoticed as she steps in one more circle before plonking down into a sit on the floor.
Then she's back to panting again, looking up at Caviar with a goofy, open-mouthed dog smile.]
[Ah, there's nothing the captain loves more than those who respect his authority, regardless of who or what they are. The little sugary puppy's sit is all Caviar needs to see before he unwrinkles his face and even starts to wag his own tail.
Bending down to his knees, he gives the monster a good pat on...wherever he assumes her "head" is before just scooping her up in his massive paws. Haha, to think he was just about to shoot this thing. Good...good thing animals can't understand something like that...haha...]
[Sparkling catches sight of Caviar stooping to pick her up, but it's already too late. He's done it, and it's all Sparkling can do not to lift his wings to shield his eyes as the Cake Hound surely plans on taking a bite out of his face-
But...that doesn't happen. Now that she's being held, she seems perfectly content to wiggle happily in Caviar's arms, immediately leaning back so she can try to lick his face.]
[Caviar carries the pup over to Sparkling's hiding spot, already discovering his mistake on his way over there. One look at his hand shows him that frosting's already getting smashed into his fur, and he can only imagine how his chest is gonna get with the way she leans against him for kisses.
Despite all this, he'll still refuse to wear a shirt.]
Y'see? She's as harmless as a halibut AND she seems to understand what behave means! Ha!
[Either that, or Caviar just knows how to convey that in dogspeak, but he doesn't want to think about that too hard.]
Now the question is, where the hell did she even come from? ...And how do we find it, 'cuz that could be our ticket back to Earthbread...
[He grabs the cake hound in both his big paws and holds her in front of him, cooing at her like she's some sort of baby. Never mind that this has suddenly become an interrogation.]
Alright, ya little goofy goldfish~ Where'd ya come from? Was it some kinda portal into another dimension? Was it? Who's a good dog?? Go find the portal, mate!
[Cheesecake's entire body is wagging practically at this point as Caviar holds her aloft, her body straining as she tries to reach his face to lick it. She seems more preoccupied with giving kisses than information, but fortunately the only other person in the room who can speak English has the answer. It's just...likely not going to be a very good one.
This seems to be a pattern for Sparkling he realizes, being a bearer of bad news...]
W-well ah...actually...
[He rubs at the back of his neck with his claws, looking down.]
I think I may have...asked Mana for her. While I was drinking. I recall mentioning something about being homesick and, well...
[It had been one thing to die the way he did in Felfri. It's entirely another to be witness to just how much it has spiraled out of hand.
He can't control what Kaito chooses to do, of course, and maybe there's some sort of karmatic retribution to be had in someone incriminating themselves in public like he did. It's not like he has anyone to blame for the response but himself. That said, it also means that everyone with a laptop and reading comprehension knows what happened. He'd chosen to tell a select few, but that was that. It's too late to bring it back now, what's done is done.
But when Sparkling eventually checks in on the post and sees Caviar's response, he realizes that he can't keep as hands-off about it as he'd like. His break for fresh air is cut short, and he's in bat form flying as fast as he possibly can towards the park. Fortunately, Caviar is not hard at all to find in his current state, even with Sparkling's limited vision as a bat. He shifts forms midair just to be safe, diving down through the cloud of mist created so he can pull up and land in front of Caviar, looking more than a little frazzled.]
[It's hard to describe the sort of rage Caviar is experiencing right now, but the people around him sure act like they can feel it. People move out of the way for the bulky wolf man as he swiftly gallops on all fours to the park his target is supposedly at, although most people would probably move out of the way for a giant furry bullet, rage or no...
So he's a little caught off guard when someone purposely gets in his way. If this was anyone else, things might have gotten......aggressive, but thankfully it's only Sparkling. You know, the last person he'd ever want to hurt here.]
Outta the way, Sparklin' Cookie, I'm in a hurry!
[It's not like the park is close by, there's enough waiting time for Sparkling's assailant to wise up and leave. Can't have that, now can we?]
[Yes Sparkling, he is- but what Sparkling means is that he's not going to let him go, not until he's at least tried to stop this. So he stands his ground, his wings still spread just in case Caviar tries to bolt around him.]
Please just...listen to what I have to say. I won't stop you, but I need to talk to you, now.
[Caviar might give an irritated growl, but he makes no break to bolt, instead standing himself up and folding his arms. As much as he'd love to be strangling a stranger he had an internet argument with right now, Sparkling is his priority. It's be foolish not to hear him out.]
I saw the post. [Like, how could he not. It was horrible.] I would much rather like to pretend it never existed, but I don't exactly have that luxury at this point. I knew that Atem would be delivering some sort of message, but I had no idea this is how it would be handled.
[Not Atem's fault, he couldn't have known Kaito would broadcast it to the network. Apparently he just can't fathom cookie's being alive which, okay fine, whatever, but there's a LOT MORE to it than just that.
He sighs slowly through gritted teeth as he brings his wings back to himself, letting them fold against his sides.]
I'm asking you as a friend, Caviar. Do not kill him. This isn't what I want.
You can't just let people get away with this kinda thing, Sparklin' Cookie. It'd be one thing if the spineless sardine had any remorse for what he's done, but he doesn't even care! Which just means he's as likely to do it again. Protectin' cookies is what I do, and nothin' protects cookies more than bringin' down monsters that eat 'em!
[Abruptly, scarcely before Caviar can finish getting the words out, Sparkling rises up to his full height with his fangs bared, the fur around his neck practically bristling.]
Oh yes, sure, an eye for an eye! And you know what that is going to do, Captain? Not only will I have suffered the cruelest death imaginable, I will have to live knowing that I got someone else killed in the exact same way over it!
[Sparkling...has likely never spoken to Caviar this way. Or even around him like this. He can command a room for sure, but this is different. His voice is shrill and thin with upset, and it is very clear that he perched right on the very edge of completely losing his composure. It really just...is all too much, happening at once.
He doesn't want to yell at Caviar. He didn't do anything wrong, he's only trying to help, but Sparkling can't....he just can't.]
I don't care if he deserves it! I want someone, anyone, in this situation to think about how I feel! Does it not matter what I think!?
[This whole time, Caviar thought he was thinking about how Sparkling felt. At least how he felt when experiencing that cruelest death imaginable. He'll never get the scene out of his head, the way Sparkling broke down in his arms after admitting he died, the ragged shape he was in when the captain found him at the bottom of the stairs. The poor thing was a mess and he didn't even know his death was just that tragic.
He huffs, his upper lip curling in frustration as he can't bring himself to look Sparkling in the eyes. His ears pin back against his head as hard as they can as he just thinks about how badly he wants to rip up the person who harmed his friend. So he stands there, quietly fuming as a vampire talks to him in a manner very few would get away with.]
[Sparkling isn't sure what he was expecting Caviar to say, but when it's to agree...he deflates. He feels that anger and frustration ebb away, leaving him feeling depressingly hollow and worn-thin. He doesn't want to feel like this ever, EVER again, but he knows that's not going to be a guarantee.
He closes a bit of the gap between them, his chest heaving a bit despite having no need to catch his breath at all.]
I know you want to protect me. It means so much to me that you do.
But I have to see to it that you are protected, too.
[Sparkling suddenly says, struggling to keep his shoulders from trembling. He can't let Caviar ruin himself this way. Sure, he will have to kill at some point...but not like this. Sparkling can't bear it.]
[Caviar was all well in good to just keep standing there, huffing and pouting over not being able to murder some guy who did them wrong. Instead, his ears perk up at Sparkling once again just being...so incredibly open towards him that he can't help but quit the tough guy act and finally turn back towards him.
Oh... What a lad...
He notices the way he trembles, the way he steps closer yet not all the way, and the captain sighs. Lowering his head, he opens his arms wide, inviting him in for the hug. If this were over anything else, Caviar would have probably just engulfed him again like he did before, but seeing how it's HIS fault Sparkling got so upset as to use a new icon talk to him in such a way, he'd rather leave it up to him if he wants it or not.]
[Honestly, Sparkling wouldn't have blamed him too much if he didn't say anything else. He would have been fine with letting the Werewolf continue on his way without further argument, so long as he kept his promise to not kill Kaito. So it's...a surprise, but not an unwelcome one, when he not only stays, but actively offers himself up once more to be a pillar for Sparkling when he needs it most.
So, in the end, it's hard for Sparkling not to cross the rest of that distance between them to hug Caviar, enveloping the other with his massive wings.]
I'm...sorry I yelled at you. Today has just been...I've been overwhelmed, and-
[Oh the relief when Sparkling takes him up on his offer, the captain instantly wrapping his arms around his friend as he feels his own body wrapped within his wings. Caviar's larger paw hands now mean he can cradle the vampire's entire head as he holds it close, stroking him gently with his thumb. Ears that were once pinned back in anger now start to droop in shame.
Wow, he really didn't consider Sparkling's feelings, huh? Here he thought he was being the big damn hero, but Sparkling must've been suffering the entire time he was having his little online spat. He's supposed to be a respectable captain, and here he is letting his feelings get out of hand. One might excuse this behavior due to monster-related changes, but Caviar was never one for excuses. Influences or not, he should take responsibility for his actions.]
Shh, what are you spoutin'? You got nothin' to be sorry for...
[He exhales, closing his eyes because that's really not something he admits to much, being tired. Weak. Needing a break. His own ears droop a bit as Caviar holds his paws against his head, leaving him feeling a bit less like he needs to carry all of this weight he feels burdened with today.]
Nah, lad. [He continues to hold onto him, suddenly going from a creature people had to get out of the way of to an obstacle people have to walk around. Caviar can't say he cares about being in anyone's way right now.] If anything, I should be thankin' ya for keeping me from makin' a huge mistake.
[As good as the revenge might feel in the moment, Caviar just knows he'd be wallowing in guilt for the rest of his life soon after. A part of him probably knew that from the start, but Kaito's unsympathetic handling of the whole situation just filled him with something he's never felt in his entire life. ...And believe him, he's been outraged plenty of times working in the Republic, this was just...different.]
If anyone's sorry, it's me for makin' you have to deal with all this nonsense when ya SHOULD be back takin' it easy.
<Sparkling> The timeline for this is kinda wonky but let's just say somewhere early Nov
